Professor to Ally: How Building a Good Relationship with your Professors Helps Improve your Grades in 2025

When I was admitted to university for my undergraduate degree, I felt ready to work hard to maintain good grades all through my four-year program. A good GPA and a possible Honors on my degree certificate! Back then, I thought that good grades only came from putting in the hours, attending class, and endless cups of coffee or the occasional energy drink. I had seen my brother do the same and went on to build an impressive career in banking. Therefore, I sought to follow the same path hoping for similar results.

Shock on me.

My first Continuous Assessment Test results came in after just three weeks. The Results? A low 13 out of the possible score of 30 marks.

I was shocked to say the least.

I had put in the hours.

While my peers were busy attending freshman parties and getting into relationships, I found a corner in the school library where I would spend many hours reading and internalizing concepts I thought were part of my course requirements.

If you know you do your best in such situations, then hope for the best.

The results from the first continuous assessment test gave me a reality check. This was not high school. I was in an institution of higher learning. At this level of study, your answers must be clear, well-reasoned, and supported by credible evidence. How could I have known?

That evening, when you chat up a continuing student who opens your eyes to the real-life implication of building relationships beyond your classmates. You learn an important trick – the power of networking at all levels. Being a successful student is about intentional behavior at a personal and social level. I had to connect with my habits, my classmates, and professors to have a full understanding of what was required of me as a student.

It is not just about mastering the syllabus or course outline and its contents. Scoring top grades calls for building meaningful relationships with my peers and professors, routines, and a resilience to actively pursue my goals no matter the challenges that emerge from time to time.

Having learnt the hard way, your journey should be easier. In this article, we explain (in simple steps) how you can turn your professors into powerful allies, build achiever habits, and become the best version of yourself in striving for a solid career path.

Be Yourself - It is not a Cliché

Hardly a week goes before someone nudges you to “Be your best self.” But let’s take a minute to reflect about what it really means in 2025’s demanding academic environment. We can go back a bit and according to the Higher Education Policy Institute HEPI, 2024 students who’ve internalized the need to actualize their full potential actually do. For example, these students consistently manage their time and mental wellbeing. HEPI reveals that 40% more likely to graduate with distinction than those who do not. Stop thinking the phrase “Best self” is just a motivational buzzword — it is a practical strategy for surviving the pressure of modern student life.

Once you are open to it, start small. You can organize your entire week in Notion so that your time is accounted for. You get to get enough sleep and rest that ensures your peak performance in class activities. Aim to align your personal growth with your academic growth. It will soon make sense.

Can you make professors your allies?

This is called the power of connections. As it is, you may perceive professors as distant or unapproachable. You may think they are avoiding nagging from students. Therefore, they maintain a distance between themselves and their students.

Here’s the truth: professors want you to succeed. Once you build a genuine rapport with them, it becomes easy to interact, ask questions, and follow up in case you didn’t understand a topic they teach. In a shot while, they can become mentors, career guides, and lifetime supporters in your career path.

Start by visiting your professors during office hours. This does not mean that you are going to beg for marks or special favors. It just means that you are interested in the course. Ask thoughtful questions as they will inform your grasp of different subjects. Visiting professors gives you an opportunity to be guided through your classwork. It helps you understand how the assignments are connected to the real-world through proper communication. Once your professors start remembering you, you are on your way to improving your grades in general.

A simple structure that works can be sending an email before following up with an in-person visit. The email should be short and simple. In a polite manner, ask your question of choice and with time, your professors get familiar with you and start trusting you. You must show the effort. In the same way, you can always reach out to us  to explain those complex questions and we will always be available to help you!

Develop habits that amplify your confidence and performance among your peers and professors.

Use feedback as fuel for improving

You shouldn’t see feedback as a criticism to you. Feedbacks provides you with a clean way of identifying your weaknesses and highlighting which areas you need to improve on.

Sometimes you fail to understand a subject better. Don’t look at it as rejection. Instead, use your professor’s notes to sharpen your next draft and writing skills. Our tutors are specialized in different subject to help you break down your rubric and help your drafts into high-scoring pieces.

Have a clear career path through mentorship

Mentorship is a sure way to get ahead of your peers as it gives you a sense of direction. Your professors are often connected to industry experts, projects, and research networks. Don’t let an opportunity to connect in to an internship by avoiding your professors. A healthy relationship with them will provide clarity of different subjects you might be overlooking.

What should be your next step?

As a focused student, aim to become the best version of yourself. This is not an overnight affair, but with consistent habits, emotional awareness, thoughtful communication and a strong support system, you are on your way to becoming an A-grade student!

Your journey might seem like a race. It might keep you on edge – always thinking about how you can improve. With the methods we’ve discussed, there’s no reason not to improve.
